Injured jockey Katelyn Mallyon has been placed in an induced coma to restrict her movement after she suffered a broken vertebra in a race fall on Saturday.
Mallyon was taken to Royal Melbourne Hospital with concussion after the fall where tests subsequently revealed a broken T6 vertebra and fractured cheekbone.
Her brother Andrew, also a jockey, and mentor and close friend Michelle Payne both used Twitter to relay the latest turn of events.
Payne is also sidelined after suffering back and facial injuries in a fall at Donald a week ago.
“Kate has been placed in induced coma to assist in keeping her still for her back injury,” Andrew Mallyon tweeted.
Des O’Keeffe of the Victorian Jockeys’ Association said Katelyn’s parents were grateful for the support but there would be no further medical updates until Tuesday.
Mallyon hit the ground when her mount Deliver The Dream went down in the home straight at Flemington.
She was able to talk and move all her limbs after the fall but was initially unconscious for a few minutes and suffered severe concussion.
Deliver the Dream’s trainer Brett Cavanough reported on Sunday that the horse had suffered no ill effects from the incident.
